Venetian Gondola Song, Opus 30, No. 6
Songs Without Words (Lieder ohne Worte) is a series of short lyrical piano pieces by the Romantic-period composer, Felix Mendelssohn, written between 1829 and 1845. There are eight volumes of Songs Without Words; each volume consists of six Lieder (songs) that were written at various points throughout Mendelssohn’s life and published separately. The Venetian Gondola Song, Opus 30, No. 6 is published in Volume 2. In this song, the impression of a vocalist being accompanied is created, and you will most likely recognize the very melodic nature of the piece, as if you were indeed listening to a singer.
When I returned from my Venice trip several months ago, I was still imbued with all the beauty of this stunning city on water. In an effort to keep the romance and daydreams going, I decided to relearn the Venetian Gondola Song, which I had practiced back in my schooling days. Please enjoy my rendition of Opus 30, No 6 and as you listen, imagine that you are softly gliding down the Grand Canal in a beautifully constructed gondola while taking in the beauty of the city and listening to the delicate melodies of a chanteuse.
Happy Sunday,
